I’m so glad you’re here. For the past few months (!!), Nthabiseng and I have been hard at work creating this podcast. It’s safe to say this project is very close to our hearts. Releasing it out into the world is scary, but so rewarding.
We hope you’ll enjoy what we have planned for the first season; 8 episodes exploring some of the most pressing themes of our 20s so far.
Every other Monday, starting Feb. 5, you can expect a new podcast episode and personal essay with our thoughts on things like feeling uncertain with your life path, reshaping your relationship with your parents as an adult, navigating the weird dating scene and so much more.
And we’re looking forward to hearing from you on how you’re navigating your 20s. We’re always taking voicemails, so don’t be shy and leave us one.
Happy listening!🎧
On crying
Now, on a more personal note. How did the podcast get its name?
The act of crying has a generally negative connotation. Crying often comes when we experience a whole range of “negative emotions1” like sadness, overwhelm, frustration, exhaustion, and anger. We often cry in private. The times where we cry in public are rare, and usually reserved for when we reach an absolute breaking point. Crying, for a lot of people, is an act shrouded in total shame.
As a kid, I was deeply sensitive. Even at 23, I’m still incredibly emotional. It doesn’t take much for me to cry. In October, after I helped the woman sitting next to me on a plane connect to the wi-fi so she could watch in-flight movies, she offered me a peppermint and I had to hold back gratitude tears at how kind strangers can be.
Nthabiseng and I hope that Cry About It will be a place where we, and our community, get to explore the range of emotion that being in our 20s inspires. Where we get to reflect, appreciate, reassess, complain, – and of course, cry – about this often messy, sometimes confusing and all-around transformative decade.
We can’t wait to be on this journey with you. Episode 1 out tomorrow!
There is no such thing as a positive emotion or a negative emotion. All emotions are necessary.
